Dedicated servers from reputable providers are built from components that have gone through stringent tests. For example, a Xeon processor on a server motherboard is more reliable than a Core2Duo. Also, Error Correction Code in server memory protects against inconsistencies.
Server processors have a lot more CPU cache so programs run much faster overall. Servers use ultra fast SAS/SCSI disks as opposed to SATA disks.
